Dinner at Al Capone's

One memorable restaurant from our trip to Cuba was La Casa de Al in Varadero. Al as in Al Capone, yes that's right the gangster associated with the prohibition! Well this beautiful building which stands exactly by the long sandy beach  used to be one of his properties! In this very house, Al Capone hid his alcohol contraband during the Prohibition Era in the U.S.

Today the building is the property of the Cuban government and has been turned into a restaurant. It is quite an elegant kind of restaurant when compared with many other Cuban restaurants. We only visited on one windy evening but I would have loved to visit for a lunch. There is a stunning terrace that stands literally on the beach but we couldn't stay there on the night as it was very windy.

The food was exceptionally good! We had calamari rings, mixed paella and a pork/lobster/shrimp combo. It was one of the best meals we ate in Cuba and knowing about the place's notorious history made the evening even more memorable!
